Stephen Bomgardner enjoys an active singing career
in opera/musical theatre and on the concert stage. He specializes in character and buffo tenor roles, and in the patter roles of Gilbert and Sullivan. His repertoire includes twenty-six different roles such as Basilio
(The Marriage of Figaro), Vasek (The Bartered
Bride), and Jack Point (The Yeoman of the Guard). Most recently he performed the role of the Major General
(The Pirates of Penzance) with the Saint Peter Choral Society and Remendado
(Carmen) with the Valley Symphony Orchestra.
He also has a passion for the art of
the song recital, and has performed over seventy solo recitals in Boston, Minneapolis, Houston, San Antonio, Wichita, and numerous other cities across the United States. His repertoire includes
a broad range of 19th and 20th century art songs, especially
the major song cycles of Schubert and Schumann, the lieder
books of Wolf, and Russian songs. He has given numerous
lecture recitals at state and national music
conventions. Equally at home in oratorio, he has performed as
soloist in thirty-five works by such composers as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and
Britten.
He is Associate Professor of Music at Drury University where
he teaches voice, voice related courses, and directs the Drury
Opera. Previously, he taught voice and opera at
Minnesota State University-Mankato, Gustavus Adolphus
College, Pittsburg State University and the University of Texas-Pan American. He also spent four summers teaching
voice and opera at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), the high school component of the Tanglewood Music Festival. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance from Boston University's School of Music, the Master of Music from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, and the Bachelor of Music from Fort Hays State University.
