Several changes have been made to the schedule for this year’s Drury Jazz Camp. All of the elements have remained essentially the same from previous years with a few additions, which we hope will add a great deal of value to the camp. We are excited to add a combo rehearsal to the camp schedule for the first time this year. Each student combo will get a full 75 minute rehearsal with one of our wonderful faculty members. We have also added a listening session where students will be exposed to many different styles of jazz, and will be given some historical background on the pieces they’re hearing. The Special Sessions in the afternoon will cover a variety of topics, including performances by local jazz groups, jam session etiquette, a panel discussion with our faculty and other topics to be announced.
Evening concerts will continue with our camp faculty as they have in the past. Concerts have an earlier start time of 7:00pm in order to accommodate the addition of the student jam sessions after the concert. Some of the evening concerts will feature the faculty combo, and others the faculty along with members of the Springfield jazz community in a big band performance. Thursday night’s concert will be devoted entirely to student combos and will begin at 6:30pm. The Friday concert will feature only student big bands and will be moved back to 1:30pm in order to better accommodate those students who must travel following the concert.
As it has been in years past, the evening concerts and jam sessions are optional (though highly recommended for commuters). Combos are now considered part of the daily schedule, although accommodations can be made for students needing to attend marching band camp during part of that time.
