WELCOME
We are pleased to announce that the 44th Drury Jazz Festival
will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Clara
Thompson Hall and the Findlay Student Center. The Drury Jazz
Festival is a competitive event that allows students and
directors to perform for and receive comments from some of
the best jazz musicians and educators in the country. Bands
are scheduled for a 25 minute performance slot, and
competition will take place in the following divisions:
Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Second Band, Jr. High, Combo, and
Springfield Middle School. Due to a ruling of the MSHSAA,
Springfield Middle School bands are prohibited from
competing with other junior or middle high schools. Band
directors may also choose to perform for comments only.
First, second and third places will be awarded in each of
the competitive classes and an outstanding solo award will
be given in all classes. Players in all classes are also
eligible for IAJE Outstanding Musicianship Certificates.
This year’s festival guest artist will be Todd Strait on drums.
A native of Topeka, KS now residing in Portland, OR, Strait spent many years in Kansas City, MO, one of the nation’s jazz hot beds. Among his most significant Kansas City associations are singers Karrin Allyson and Kevin Mahogany, and the young rising piano star, Eldar Djangirov.
Todd's role as a jazz educator and clinician is very much rooted in the fact that he, too, has been a dedicated student. His teachers have included such respected drummers as Ed Soph, Gary Chester, Joe Morello, John Riley.
Todd has been a featured clinician at the Missouri Music Educators Association's annual convention, the University of Kansas Summer Jazz Camp, Great Plains Jazz Camp in Emporia, KS, the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) Jazz Camp, and many more. (See details on his Teaching page.)
While in Kansas City he held an adjunct instructor position and currently holds an adjunct instructor position at Mt. Hood Community College in Portland, OR.
The deadline for entries is Friday, February 19, 2010.
Additional information will be sent to you once we receive
your registration form. Please do not hesitate to call or
email me if you have any questions.
